Port Royal State Park

Experience the natural quiet beauty of both creeks and forest when you visit Port Royal State Park. Located in the heart of Tennessee, this state park boasts some of the most scenic overlooks and trails in the nation. View the Red River and Sulphur Fork Creek in one afternoon, and explore the Trail of Tears the same day.

History

Port Royal Park is located at the original site of the Port Royal colony and trading post, which was established in the 1780s. Its location at the junction of the two rivers made it the only stop on the stagecoach line between Nashville and Golconda, Illinois. The land was donated to the state in 1977 and officially became a state park in 1978.

Popular trails

This park is home to several popular hiking trails. The Overlook Trail is only about 100 yards long, but offers a great view of the Red River. The Trail of Tears is a preserved portion of the original Trail of Tears, traveled by Native Americans as they were driven from their land. This trail is easy to hike. The River Bottom Trail connects to the trail of tears and allows for a leisurely stroll through the bottom section of the park.

Additional activities

Along with hiking and exploring, guests can fish in the river. Licenses are needed, and only boats that are carried by hand are allowed in the river.

Visiting the Port Royal State Park is an event one cannot easily forget. The mixture of history and a beautiful view come together for an enjoyable experience.
