Long Hunter State Park

Set along the shores of J. Percy Priest Lake in Davidson County Tennessee, Long Hunter State Park offers visitors wonderful walking trails, wheelchair accessible facilities and lots of water activities. The park is divided up into three units, Baker’s Grove, Couchville and Bryant Grove. There is also a state managed archaeological area, Sellars Farm.

Water sports

Swimming is only available at Bryant Grove. There are no lifeguards, and swimmers are warned that the lake bottom is dangerous and they swim at their own risk. There are two boat ramps at the 14,000 acre, man-made J. Percy Priest Lake. Water-skiing, fishing and pleasure boating are popular activities. During the summer, season rental boats are available at Couchville Lake. Catch fish at J. Percy Priest Lake; large and small mouth bass, rockfish and catfish are just a few of the regular species.

Picnicking

Two large picnic shelters are available at Bryant Grove and Couchville. The Bryant Grove site has a large parking area, and is near the swimming beach. There is also a volleyball court and a playground. The Couchville site is within a short walk from two parking areas. Both shelters are near restroom facilities. Reservations for the shelters are made beginning January 1 of the current year.

Other activities

A group camping area is available for organized youth groups. A small fee is charged and adult supervision is required. Several pleasant walking trails weave through the park and around the lake. The Jason Allen Arboretum Trail has stenciled leaves on the path and trees have identification labels. For a short walk, try the Nature Loop Trail. This trails wanders through an old field and a young forest. To study Native American culture, visit the Sellars farm Sate Archaeological Area.

More than just a great recreation area, Long Hunter State Park is considered a sanctuary for everything that has to do with nature. Rocks, fossils, plants, wildlife and animals are protected within the park. Visitors can enjoy plenty of outdoor activities and learn about nature and archaeology.
